Government Agency

NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development (public)
Contact: Lin Zeng, Deputy Director

We have a relationship with Ms. Zeng at Housing Preservation and Development of Brooklyn, who prefers that inquiries about specific lots come through 596 Acres because it's an efficient way for us to check up on the status of multiple lots at once. If you'd like to find out if this site might be available for community use, let us know and we'll contact HPD for you: organizers@596acres.org or 718-316-6092 ext 1. Remember: Take a look at the notes at the the bottom of this page first to see if your neighbors have already found out this information!

The steps below have been completed: - find a lot - get permission to use from city or private lot owner - create core group of people for the project

Hey land stewards in district 33!

Your council member, Steve Levin, will be saying nice things about your spaces at our event on Thursday evening. Please let me know if you'd like me to add you or other members of your group to the guest list. It would be great to see lots of your faces in the room. Here's what Steve has agreed to speak about:

We'd love to have him attend and would really love to have him talk about the vacant-lot reclamations in his district: Java Street Community Garden, 61 Franklin Street Community Garden, the Vinegar Hill Community Garden, La Casita Verde, Myrtle Village Green, A Small Green Patch and the new GreenSpace on 4th Avenue. We'd love to feature Mr. Levin talking about the value of communities having space to determine their own programming and draw resources to themselves as part of our event. We know that groups who newly have access to space with our help and support have raised over $150,000 for building and programming these spaces in the last year.

If you send me photos, we'll project those too!

Tami, HPD wrote me,

“At this point we believe the project will likely not begin construction until the latter part of the year so it should be okay for the gardeners to remain on the site through this year’s growing season. We’ve been in communication with the gardeners and will follow up to advise them of this.”

REMINDER: Now that we have 4 groups that have gotten official access to their lots in the 596 Acres network, we are thinking about how to make our online tools useful for the next stage of local organizing. As members of one of these groups -- this means useful for you! How can we add features to our website that let you better use the 596 Acres network to improve your work? Come tell us!

We are hosting a conversation on Thursday, May 31 at 5:30pm at The Commons (388 Atlantic Ave., Brooklyn). We'll provide some snacks and post it notes. We really want to hear from you! Please RSVP to tell us you can make it. Also please share this invitation with your group -- we'd love to hear from everyone from leaders to casual volunteers!
