$10 million of New York State funding is heading to this part of the city! I learned about it here: http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/bronx/bronx-civic-center-10m-cuomo-revitalization-plan-article-1.3510845

The article says: "A local planning team will use $300,000 from the award to develop a strategic investment plan on how best to use the remaining funds to improve the area."

Maybe investing in this location to make it the public community space that you and your neighbors want can be part of the plan!

The article also says: '“With this funding, the South Bronx will have the opportunity to reach its full potential using community-based efforts to strengthen our neighborhoods,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.'

You could start trying to direct the funding here by contacting BP Ruben Diaz's office. Try James Rausse, the office's Director of Planning & Development: (718) 590-3514. You can ask about being part of this local planning team mentioned in the news, and ask that you be kept in the loop in the process. Make sure you get the name of who you speak to and their email address so you can follow up, too. When you write to follow up after you call, you can copy organizers@596acres.org to your email for support. You can record notes from your call on the lot page here. Good luck!

See message below. After some googling I see that the corporation that is leasing this space is caught up in some drama. Instead of reaching out to them (which might be pointless) I encouraged Teresa to talk to the rest of the community board about it and to call the council member!!

Mary,

While it is owned by the City, we do not have site control of this block/lot. It is leased by the Bronx Parking Development Corporation, who also manage the other parking lots in the Yankee Stadium area. I don’t have a contact off hand for them.

Best,

Charlie

Ms. Wright let me know that NYPD uses the space to hold Roll Call, only when there is a Yankee Game, and not parking. To clarify, it is located off the Major Deegan North Exit 5 (service road), directly under the Macombs Dam Bridge to the east of the highway. It is padlocked and brimming with weeds. Ms. Downing,

I just left a message in your office. I'm inquiring about a piece of land in the Bronx, just east of the Macombs Dam Bridge: Bronx block 2357, lot 32. According to the Department of Finance the lot is under the EDC's jurisdiction. Included on this email is Ms. Teresa Wright, a resident of the area who is concerned with the lot's appearance and safety. We're wondering if there's opportunity for a neighborhood group to get involved with beautifying the space. I don't necessarily mean for folks to have unlimited or regular access, but to be able to spruce up the space so that less folks driving by throw litter into it and it act as a feature to brighten the neighborhood.

Can you confirm that this parcel is under the EDC's jurisdiction and let us know how neighbors can get involved?

Thanks so much!

Best,

Mary Elizabeth Prall

Neighbors who attended Bronx Community Board 4's Parks Committee meeting a few weeks ago contacted us about improving the space. Neighbors are tired of having to call the Department of Sanitation to complain that it needs to be cleaned up!
