Why is this lot here?
We think this lot is vacant because:
Government Agency
We have a relationship with Ms. Zeng at Housing Preservation and Development of Brooklyn, who prefers that inquiries about specific lots come through 596 Acres because it's an efficient way for us to check up on the status of multiple lots at once. If you'd like to find out if this site might be available for community use, let us know and we'll contact HPD for you: organizers@596acres.org or 718-316-6092 ext 1. Remember: Take a look at the notes at the the bottom of this page first to see if your neighbors have already found out this information!
Urban Renewal
This lot is part of the Saratoga Square urban renewal plan.

Just spoke to Derek. He's gathering neighbors who want to transform this lot into a community growing space. He has a sketch already. Onwards!
A neighbor brought this lot to our attention (it wasn't in the City database!). Here is what we told them:
Wow - nice find! This lot belongs to the City of New York. We just added it to our website here: https://livinglotsnyc.org/lot/59305/
You can organize to have it transferred to the NYC Parks Department
Start by clicking ORGANIZE on the page.
Here is a sketch of what a campaign for transfer will looks like: https://livinglotsnyc.org/pathways/access-nyc-hpd-land/
The things you will definitely need are:
- List of community members interested in the project (at least 10 names, addresses, phone numbers, emails)
- Sketch or rendering of how you want to use the lot
- A mission or vision statement that lists benefits to the community;
- A letter of support from community board 16
- A name for the proposed garden/group being formed to look after the garden;
- List of partners/sponsors/endorsers (including churches, school, local business, city agencies, etc.)
- OPTIONAL but very nice: a letter of support from Council Member Mealy; once you have a group together and a short written proposal, we can introduce you to her staff
- OPTIONAL but very nice: Letters of support from other local organizations
