Monday's Board meeting went really well. Board members and community members alike were very interested in the project that we've put into motion to get this garden up and running.

A handful of board members pledged their support. Journalists from local newspapers asked to write pieces on the progress we've made to date, with the first article expected to be released in the Queens Tribune this week.

Yesterday, DCAS denied our request to provide to CB7 with a letter confirming the lot's availability . Subsequently, I am scheduling a meeting with the Parks Committee of CB7. At that meeting, my team will ask that the Board consider my inability to furnish the letter from DCAS, waive the requirement, and provide a letter of support, as confirmation of the lot's availability can be obtained by a simple phone call to Kyle Daniels at DCAS.

We need more volunteers to sign up as members on our application to Greenthumb. Anyone interested, please contact me at 718-600-0121 (or alishia0220@yahoo.com to be added to our mailing list)

Per Isak, the letter of confirmation from GreenThumb is coming, but is being held up as they update their Parks Planning team. So...waiting game.

So far we have only 7 volunteers, so in an effort to get more people on board as members, we'll be going door to door this Sunday, leaving informational handouts for local residents.

So close, yet still far.

I spoke with Kyle Daniels today, who informed me that the lot's listing as a "paper street" will not impede on our ability to use it as a community garden.
Great News!

He also said that DCAS would be willing to provide written confirmation that the lot is available for a garden lease, after GreenThumb confirms that it is suitable for gardening. Isak Mendes at GreenThumb is working on providing that confirmation.

Also, there are now signs posted at the site, informing passersby of our intentions to establish the community garden.

Lastly, the owner of Hydroponic Gardens Center, located on Horace Harding has expressed interest in the project and has offered up a space for organizers to meet, if necessary.

A neighbor named Alishia has been working on transforming this lot into a garden. She talked to Kyle Daniels at DCAS this week and heard this from him:

The lot is listed as a "paper street", which means that the city has listed this space for use as a potential street in the future, if ever the need should arise.

Kyle is following up on the possibility of having the lot transferred to NYC Parks anyways.

A resident of the area named Marina became an organizer here. The next steps here are talking with the folks that run the cemetery to see if they have an agreement with the City to use this space, and if so, if perhaps they'd be interested in sharing it with neighbors! I also told Marina that reaching out the community board (info under "Political Boundaries" on this page) would be a good start to getting more info about the property.

Kyle Daniels at DCAS (the agency that controls this property, listed above) can also be shot an email to find out what DCAS has in store for it!
