Conduit for the Old Brooklyn Aqueduct!
Conduit for the Old Brooklyn Aqueduct! Map from: http://www.teacharchives.org/documents/water-works-map-1864/ And here's info from http://www.nych2o.org/old-brooklyn-waterworks.html: "North Conduit Avenue and Sunrise Highway (A.K.A. South Conduit Avenue) followed the brick water pipeline that brought the water west from reservoirs out east. Robert Moses recognized that these paths were straight and flat routes and built roads along their path in 1934. Additionally, Aqueduct Raceway is so named because it is located where the aqueduct was." Matt of NYCH2O said today: "To my knowledge there is not water flowing in the old Brooklyn aqueduct that lies under the median of Conduit Ave. There may be more modern water mains but I do not know. You would have to ask DEP." Onwards!

The large landscaped medians along North Conduit Avenue are under the jurisdiction of the City of New York Department of Transportation (CDOT) and you may contact Tika Gurung at 212-839-6989 regarding the feasibility of using the landscaped malls for the uses you noted below. Also, you may want to contact our Deputy Director of GreenThumb, Roland Chouloute at 212-442-8952, regarding the possibility of any available land for community gardening in the neighborhood. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance with this matter.

In 2000, a plan for was put forward for the median that was never realized (http://www1.nyc.gov/assets/planning/download/pdf/plans/transportation/td_fullconduit.pdf).
