Brooklyn block 3227, lot 8 (584 HART STREET). More details at OASIS.
Why is this lot here?
We think this lot is vacant because:
ACS Administrative Office, oversees ACS property
I just got this note from Carlos.Martinez@parks.nyc.gov:
" We now have green light to activate ACS on a case by case basis as long there’s a group of neighbors willing to steward the site. "
To get your lot on GreenThumb's transfer list, get in touch with him ASAP.
Robert Camacho told me that at the Bushwick Community Plan meeting (Open Space Subcommittee) that this used to be a hazardous abandoned building. He and fellow parents organized to take over the lot with ACS! They made it a playground. This was like 15 years ago.
Eventually after, they lost it when ACS put out an RFP and partnered with another org which then had exclusive access.
How to make sure this public land stays open to the general public when the daycare isn't using it? And that it stays maintained?
I spoke to a man who was working on the lot an he siad the playground is being redone and is still in the hands of ACS.
Happy Summer everyone! : )
Thanks, Paula! I agree, the kids from the school should be able to use this space to learn and play. I've never seen a child in there, ever.
I just changed the owner contact to the Administration of Children's Services (ACS), based on our communications with Kyle at the Department of Citywide Administrative Services.
Call the ACS Administrative Office at 212-341-9005 and ask about this property.
There is an City-funded Daycare at 590 HART STREET, BROOKLYN 11221 right around the corner that has no outdoor space at all and can really use it!
(The daycare rents space from a private building owners.)
paula at 596 acres said
"Have you heard back from Kyle?"
Hi Paula, This reply is about a year late but, yes, Kyle did reply after a while and he said it was being used by ACS.
I just passed the lot today, though, and the playground was disassembled and all weeds were cut, suddenly. I wonder what's happening with the spot. Does anyone know? Thanks!
I emailed Kyle ( email below ). Let's see what happens. It's a nice little space for the kiddos to learn and play!
Hello. I am attempting to get in touch with the organizers of a lot in Bushwick, Brooklyn, Block 3227, lot 7 -8 located on 580 Hart Street, Brooklyn, 11221. I was advised that this land is under the jurisdiction of the NYC Department of Citywide Administrative Services and that I should contact you directly.
This space appears to be a playground, however, having lived down the road for the past three years, I've never seen it open or with children inside. The play areas are fading and nature is slowly taking over.
Are there plans for this space in the near future? If not, is there currently a land steward who has access? I would love to reach the key-holders of this space in order to help clean it up and attend to the land, if possible. Would you help me in this effort?"
We just got this note from an organizer:
"This lot seems like a playground but it looks, pretty much, abandoned. I pass it frequently and in my three years living down the road, I've never seen it open or with children inside. The weeds and trees seem to be, slowly, taking over and the play stations are faded. It would be great if it remained a playground and there seems to be plenty of room for growing here and there - it simply needs some attention.
I'd love to find out who has the keys so I can clean it up. : )
Thanks for all your hard work!"
